Photographs by Lionel Wendt at exhibition in Japan The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan has organised a photographic exhibition entitled 'Modern Artists III - The Gaze of Modernity', featuring a wide range of modern photographic works by Sri Lankan photographer Lionel Wendt (1900-1944).
This is the third such exhibition of the Modern Artists series which introduces an artist or group who developed Modern art in Asia. Lionel Wendt contributed to the establishment of 'Group 43' that was the first modern art movement in Sri Lanka. Sixty six pieces of photographic works by Lionel Wendt, a DVD projection of the film 'Songs of Ceylon' and other works related to 43 Group (from FAAM collection) will be on display at this exhibition. This primarily Asian exhibition displaying photographs of Sri Lankan origin is extremely significant especially in the context of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan celebrated by both countries last year, says a press release from the Embassy of Japan. This exhibition will further enhance the cultural exchange and friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Japan. Sri Lankans visiting Fukuoka, during the period of this exhibition would have a wonderful opportunity of viewing this exhibition which commenced on August 21 and continues till October 28.
