Radio chat shows are the newest fads in town, with one DJ trying to outdo another in entertainment and providing information to draw the listener to the station they represent. DJing to some means nothing on earth and the listener is drawn automatically to the radio station. Here two popular DJs give their views. Trevine of Gold FM To what audience does your show cater?
What kind of music do you play ? I play a selection of country music from the early sixties right upto the eighties. How do you make your audience cackle? It's not so much as to making them cackle but to give the listeners what they want by playing the kind of music they like listening to. So I really believe in making my audience happy !!!! The response has been fantastic. It's quite amazing to know that there are so many Country Music fans here in Sri Lanka. I've been maintaining a pretty good rapport with my audience. I never fail to talk to them when they call up for requests and they too have been pretty appreciative and supportive. They don't actually call up with" "things" because they know that the show is a rather tight one, where there are a lot of callers waiting "on line" for their turn. Most of them are more than satisfied just to hear their names and their requests played. However, I do get the odd caller with what you might call "things". But we have to be fair by the other callers as well. So we explain to them so that no one gets offended and then move on with the show. If you are presenting the show which is not a request show, do you play the music that the audience wants or is it music that reflects your taste in music? If it's the latter, is it fair by the listeners? It's actually something like this. If you work at an "Oldies" radio station. The DJ is obviously an "Oldies" fan and you know for sure that the audience are lovers of "Oldies as well. So, be it my taste in music or the listeners' it really comes down to the same thing. We had people calling since we started the 'DJ picks of the week', about their presentation and the accents some of them adopt which are alien to Sri Lanka. What have you to say? Do you speak in your natural accent or do you feel that you've got to imitate any kinda' accent? To begin with I do not have an accent, but indefinitely have a style of my own. The most important way of drawing your listener and being close to them is by being yourself. I've been in broadcasting for about six years and I've met DJs who have accents only when they present a show or are "On air". If so, they should use the same accent in everyday life, but this isn't the case. Therefore I feel that most of them are just "put on", it's a kind of attitude they adopt when they are DJs. Do you portray your true image on air? It's a little difficult to portray one's true image on air because the listeners can't actually see you. But I guess they have their own picture of what the DJ looks like. Being yourself always makes you sound sincere and that automatically portrays your true image on air. How do you draw your listener? Essentially it's the music and the style of presentation that draws the listener and when it's a request show the listeners are drawn quite naturally because their choice of music is played . The DJ has to find ways of keeping the listeners locked onto the station, not only by sharing information but by being entertaining and this is where your style comes into play. It's like I said earlier, the show gets you busy and there's not much time for information except for something appropriate to the show. I don't believe in stuffing the listeners with information, information should be shared with the listeners on the right programmes e.g. the Morning Show or the Drive Time Show. ############### Shenali of TNL radio 1. To what audience does the show cater, what's it called and what time is it?
2. What kind of music do you play? The music I play is a mix of rock, R&B and pop..but its more towards rock music cause when its requests time almost everyone wants to listen to rock!! 3. How do u make the listener cackle? Well I became a rep recently so if I make the people who listen to me laugh on and off, that's great but if I haven't yet..I hope to in the future!! 4. What's the response? How's the interaction between you and the listener? Do they actually call u up with things? yup..quite a few people call me up. They just call to say hi or to get info about a song and if I am having a bad day some people call up and say nice things or just say that they're going through a bad patch as well...but whenever I do the night shift I get one or two freaky people who call in..that's a tiny bit scary. 5. If you are presenting a show which is not a request show, do you play music that the audience wants or is it music that reflects your taste in music? If it's the latter, is it fair by the listener? I'd play music the audience wants to hear and add a few of the tracks I like here and there. 6. We've had people calling us since we started the DJ picks, about their presentation and the accent that some of them adopt which are alien to Sri Lanka. What have you to say? Do you speak in your natural accent or do you feel that you've got to imitate any kinda accent? I just speak as I normally do..people who put on accents sound so silly and sometimes they turn their accents off and on..you can see that they are faking it big time..I am just myself.. 7. Do you portray your true image on air? Yup..there is no point building up a fake image..listeners aren't stupid..they can see through it really fast and from that point on its downhill for you. 8. How do you draw your listener? By playing requests for them!!! |
