SLMC for new MoU with UNP by P. Krishnaswamy The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), seeking to review its relationship with the ruling UNP is in the process of drafting a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), specially with regard to the party position in future elections. The SLMC is a constituent of the UNP, and its leadership has held a series of meetings with the UNP leadership on future SLMC-UNP relationship. SLMC Chairman and Deputy Minister of Housing Basheer Segu Dawood revealing that the SLMC was in the process of drafting a new MoU, described the talks with the UNP leadership as 'very healthy and constructive'. He also said that another round of talks between the SLMC delegation led by Minister Rauff Hakeem and the UNP delegation led by UNP Chairman Mallik Samarawickreme had been scheduled for tomorrow. The SLMC chairman said that instead of rushing through election times to forge a new MoU, it was preferable that the constituent parties held regular meetings to iron out any differences. In regard to the SLMC demand for independent representation at the peace talks, he said that they had placed their proposal before the Government. It was up to the Government, he said, to take up the matter with the other parties concerned and give a positive response. |
