SLFP-JVP alliance falls apart The SLFP-JVP talks on a joint alliance collapsed on Friday, with neither party able to reach an agreement on several fundamental issues. The two parties have been ironing out details of a joint alliance for the past eight months before Friday's final break-up. However, the spokesmen for both sides said that they would come together to safeguard the sovereignty of the country. The Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa said that JVP and the SLFP could not reach any common stance on the issue of devolution of powers, with the SLFP supporting the devolution and the JVP opposing it. "So likewise when we failed to reach a common stance on various other issues, we decided to call off the proposed alliance he said. People's Alliance spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunmugama said that they have stopped the talks temporarily and that it may resume in the future. "We have to pay more attention towards our policies and plans at this juncture", he said. |
