Four records in swimming on day one of National School Games by LESLIE FERNANDO Dilini Liyanage and Chathuri Abeykoon, the two national swimmers both from Ladies College, set two new meet records and Ladies College and St. Bridget's Convent relay teams also established new meet records in the swimming championships at the All-Island School Games 2003 conducted by the Ministry of Education and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday. The meet will be continued today at 8.00 a.m. Dilini accounted for new meet record in the 50 metres backstroke girls under-19, clocking 34.75 secs. The previous mark was held by Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent 34.95 secs last year. Chathuri improved on the record in the girls under-17, 50 metres Butterfly stroke, clocking a time of 33:26. She erased off her own mark of 33.35 secs established last year. Third record was in the 4x50 metres girls under-17 freestyle relay. The relay 'Quartet' of Ladies College - Chathuri, Nihara Gunasekera, Nirusha Samarasekera, Thanuja Fernando times 2:10:98 secs to beat the earlier mark held by Mahamaya College, Kandy 2:26:18 secs in 2002. St. Bridget's Convent relay team comprising Mariza Alexander, Mahesha Tennakoon, Deshinie Perera, Menaka de Silva had the record time of 2:10:20 secs in the 4x50 metres freestyle relay girls under-19. They erased off the previous record of 2:14:05 secs of Mahamaya College, Kandy last year. Mahamaya College also improved on the existing record with a time of 2:11:86 secs. The other winners were Gihan de Silva (Thurstan) boys u-17 breaststroke 35.21 secs. Chathuri Abeykoon (Ladies College) girls u-17, 50 metres backstroke 37.01 sec, H. B. Hulugalla (Trinity) boys u-19, 100 metres freestyle 1:00:84 secs, Nilmin Aresacularatne (St. Joseph's College) boys u-17, 100 metres freestyle 1:00:62 secs. Mihiri Kandanarachchi (Mahamaya College Kandy) girls u-17, 200 metres Individual Medley - 2:46:71 secs, Dilanthi Ranaweera (Mahamaya College Kandy) girls u-19, 50 metres butterfly stroke 33.23 secs and 200 metres individual medley - 2:53:60 secs. The meet will be continued today. Netball All favourite teams moved to the second-round in the netball championship at the All Island School Games played at Siyane Science Faculty ground at Veyangoda yesterday. The defending champions Kalutara BV, last year's runner-up Pannala National School, Newstead BV Kandy, St. Joseph's BV Kegalle, Sacred Heart Convent Galle, St. Joseph's BV Nugegoda, Girls High School Kandy, Southlands MV Galle, Maliyadeva BV, Sangamitta BV Galle, Hillwood College Kandy. Senanayake College, St. Michael's College Batticaloa, Dharmasoka Vidyalaya Ambalangoda, Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa, Nalanda College, Prince of Wales College, Richmond College, Maliyadeva College moved the next round after registering easy wins in the boys basketball championships at the All-Island School Games played at Ananda College courts yesterday. In the girls tournament, St. Joseph's BV Nugegoda, Maliyadeva BV, St. Paul's Milagiriya, Presbyterian Girls School Dehiwala, St. Bridget's Convent, Dharmasoka Vidyalaya, Sangamitta MV Galle, St. Mary's Convent Trincomalee recorded comfortable wins to qualify to the second round. The matches were played at Visakha Vidyalaya courts. The matches will be continued today and tomorrow. Badminton The fancied teams in both the boys and girls had an easy passage to the second round of the badminton championships at the All-Island School Games played at S. Thomas' College Mt. The shuttlers from Royal College, Dharmasoka Ambalangoda, Sri Devananda Ambalangoda, Ananda College, Dharmaraja College, D. S. Senanayake College, St. Thomas' College Bandarawela put up a pleasing performance in the boys championships in the first round matches. Meanwhile in the girls tournament Mahamaya College Kandy, Visakha Vidyalaya, Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda, Musaeus College, Sri Devananda Vidyalaya Ambalangoda, Anula Vidyala and Girls High School Kandy were in front after the first round games. Table Tennis The three-day table tennis championship for both boys and girls at the All-Island School Games saw no upsets recorded at the matches played at S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia, Indoor Stadium yesterday. In the boys, Royal, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, Dharmasoka, S. Thomas', Sri Devananda, Richmond, Isipatana players were in good form and reached the second round comfortably. Girl's High School Kandy, Maliyadeva BV, Visakha Vidyalaya, Devananda Vidyalaya, Pushpadana Vidyalaya, St. Joseph's BV, Mahamaya College Kandy, Devi Balika Vidyalaya proved their superiority to move into the second round. The matches will be continued today and tomorrow. Carrom The slicers from Badulla MV, Zahira Mawanella, Prince of Wales Moratuwa, St. John's MV Nugegoda, Dharmasoka Vidyalaya, Al Adhan MV Badulla, St. Peter's College, De Mazenod College in the boys, Sumana BV Ratnapura, Vihara Mahadevi BV Badulla, Dunuwila Ratnapala MV, Akuressa, Visakha Vidyalaya, Anula Vidyalaya, Galatha Vidyalaya, Atabage, Senadikari National School, Udahinnathenna among the girls sliced their way systematically to reach the second round in the carrom championships at the All-Island School Games played at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka Headquarters, Reid Avenue, Colombo.
