A good time was had by all! by A. C. DE SILVA Everything was there and the vast crowd that thronged the BMICH on August 29th for the history-making Silver Jubilee OBSERVER-BATA Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year show went home happy and contented. There was Wesleyite Farveez Maharoof - the former school captain and now under-19 Sri Lanka skipper getting the 'plum' - the schoolboy Cricketer of the Year All-Island award and also the award for the Best Batsman All-Island, two prestigious awards indeed and he richly deserved those awards for his fine performances during the season. Then there was also Chinthaka Rasanga Perera of President's College, Kotte receiving the award for the Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award and two other awards - Best Bowler Outstation and Best Allrounder Outstation. It was also a pleasant sight to see two Jaffna schoolboy cricketers - Chandranathan Mathusan of Kokuvil Hindu College making a trip down to Colombo to receive the Schoolboy Cricketer of the North award while last year's winner of this award Pathmanathan Kavender of St. John's Jaffna received the runners-up award this year. It was not only a case of schoolboys marching up to the rostrum to receive their awards from the distinguished personalities - Chief Guest Thilanga Sumathipala - President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka and Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom and Mrs. Sumathipala, Chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited Nalin Ladduwahetty and Mrs. Anushika Ladduwahetty, Managing Director of Bata Shoe Company Kym Bradley and Mrs. Jane Bradley, there was also red hot music provided by Sohan and the Experiments with Corrine, Rajieve, the irrestible Ronnie Leitch, the eye-catching dance forms of the Western Dance Band and the unscheduled dance act by the unforgettable 'one man cheer squad' Percy Abeysekera and his charming wife Melani that kept the large audience captivated. For any show to be successful there has to be a knowledgeable compere and in Laddie Hettiaratchy, Observer and Bata found the ideal man, who, with the experience gained in 21 shows before this one, kept all well informed of the doings of the cricketers and other details to keep the show going. |
