Karandupona Hill Climb promises rich fare on Sept. 21 Karandupona Hill Climb - one of the oldest hill climbs in Sri Lanka will have added importance this year with so many drivers and riders vying for honours to come on top of Mcfoil - SLARDAR Championship. The hill climb will be on Sunday September 21 starting at 9 a.m. It was to be held last month but was postponed due to bad weather. SLARDAR has received over 100 entries but further entries will be entertained upto September 9 at the SLARDAR Club Office Park 7 Shop building, Nugegoda. This hill climb was first organised by the Europeans under the Ceylon Motor Sports flag and it was revived by SLARDAR in 1983 with the Lions Club of Kegalle. Last year, the Kegalle Municipal Council joined SLARDAR and had the hill climb. This year too the same combination will be in operation and a successful meet is anticipated. Besides the main sponsor Mcfoil, the co-sponsors will be Coca-Cola, Lion Brewery, Samsung, Phoenix, Mannapperuma Traders, U.S. Motor Spare Parts and MRF Car Care. After four rounds of the Mcfoil SLARDAR championship 2003 namely, Katukurunda Circuit Meet 1, Radella Hill Clumb, Foxhill Supercross and the Gajaba Supercross, no clear leader is there, in any of the championship events. Group A Cars over 12 Kg/Hp: This event was led by a big margin by Nishan Wasalathantri upto the Gajaba Supercross event. Unfortunately, he met with a major pile up, soon after the start of the first race. Upulwan Serasinghe who survived that incident, went on to win both events to gain the leaders slot with 43 points. Nishan Wasalathantri is lying second with 40 points. Group M & T Cars upto 3500 cc: The supercar event this year has become a battle between three Mitsubishi Evos driven by Aravinda Premadasa on 40 points, Dinesh Deheragoda on 36 points and Pradip Jayawardena on 34 points. Nalin D Perera who had a good outing at the Gajaba Super Cross in his new Subaru Impressa is lying fourth on 29 points. Dinesh Deheragoda who won at Karandupona Hill climb last year will be the favourite to win this year too. Ford Formula 1600 cc: Last years champion driver Rohan de Silva, who did not have much luck this year,is lying fourth with 09 points from three outings. Rohan, who recorded the fastest timing at the Karandupona Hill Climb last year is hot favourite to win his pet event this year too. But championship leader Romani de Silva with 20 points will be main challenger, followed by Dinesh Jayawardena with 16 points and Honda Man Rizvi Farouk with 10 points. Group MX Racing Motor Cycles upto 125 cc: This championship event will be decided on the 21st of September 2003 at the Karandupona Hill Climb. In this category, new riding sensation, 19 year old Gayan Sandaruwan who made Sri Lanka proud at the Gajaba Supercross, beating all Indian riders and last years champion rider Nalin Perera, will have a chance to become the Champion Rider for the year 2003, if he come first at the Karnadupon Hill climb by beating championship leader Udesh Wedisinghe who is on 23 points. Unfortunately, Indian rider Wijaya Kumar who is on 20 points will not be taking part. |
