Mahaweli Games on grand scale without touching state funds - Minister Perera Although Rs. 6 Million is needed to conduct the 17th Mahaweli Games at Embilipitiya on September 13 and 14 where nearly 2000 competitors are expected to participate in seven discipline, government coffers will not be touched as the needed finances will be got through sponsors and various well-wishers. So said the Minister of Water Management and Irrigation, Gamini Jayawickreme Perera, at a media briefing held at the Mahaweli Centre last Wednesday. He also disclosed that the Games started in 1986 by the late Gamini Dissanayake, saw 40 sportsmen and sportswomen from the Mahaweli areas reach national level with 29 vying at international level where nine have brought honour to the country. Eight thousand competitors participated at Unit, Divisional and Zonal level with 2000 qualifying for Embilipitiya and the seven disciplines are - Volleyball (men and women), Netball, Marathon (men and women), Kabaddi (men and women), Cycling (men and women). Athletics and Water Sports as well which includes Wind Surfing and Water Skiing which will be held at Chandrika Tank. The Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training will also conduct workshops during those two days at Embilipitiya, which includes Vocational Guidance programmes, Apprentice Training, Self-Employment and Mobile Employment Service too. Mobile Services will also be provided by the Samurdhi Authority, Samurdhi Commissioner-General's Department, Registrar General's Department, Labour Commissioner's Department, Registration of Persons, Department of Emigration, Coconut Development Board, Forest Department, Foreign Employment Bureau, Southern Development Authority.
