88th National Tennis Championships : Mahesha storms into women's final beating defending champ Dinali by LAL GUNASEKERA Young Mahesha Seneviratne knocked out the defending national champion Dinali de Silva in a three-setter (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) in a match that lasted two hours 40 minutes to set up a battle with another teenager Thiyumi Abeysinghe in the final of the Women's Open Singles at the 88th National Championship of Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath. This is being sponsored by F & G Property Developers and Fingara Club. Thiyumi Abeysinghe, too, had a long drawn out battle against a former Federation Cup player Shalini de Silva (nee Pereira) 6-4, 6-3, but the scores hardly reflect the quality of the play by two vastly different players. The final may be worked off today - weather permitting. It will be recalled that Thiyumi has beaten Mahesha in two finals this year - Under 18 and Women's Singles at the Colombo Championship. In the Men's Open Singles, defending champion Franklyn Emmanual plays the winner of the Oshada Wijemanne vs D. Mayadunne clash in one semi-final, while a former national champion and Davis Cup veteran Rohan de Silva is billed to meet another former champion Rajiv Rajapakse. Franklyn Emmanual and Oshada Wijemanne are in the 'semis" of the Men's Open Doubles and will be pitted against one of the "greats" Arjun Fernando who is being partnered by Rohan de Silva. |
