Indian Navy Chief due here

Indian Navy Chief, Admiral Madhvendra Singh, PVSM, AVSM, ADC is due to visit Sri Lanka from February 9-12 on the invitation of the Government of Sri Lanka and Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri.

During his stay here, he will call on the President, the Prime Minister, the Defence Secretary and other service chiefs.

Admiral Madhvendra will also visit naval bases including those in Trincomalee and hold a separate discussion with his Sri Lankan counterpart on naval issues.

Admiral Madhvendra Singh, is the son of late Maj. Gen. K. Bhagwati Singh, who was the first cadet to pass out of the Indian Military Academy (IC No. 1). He hails from Chomu in Jaipur district of Rajasthan.

He specialised in Gunnery and has also undergone the Advanced Gunnery Course at the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, United Kingdom. He is a Graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and a postgraduate of the Naval War College, Newport, USA and the National Defence College, New Delhi.

He has commanded the Missile Frigate Talwar, the Naval Academy at Kochi, the Missile Destroyer Ranvir and the Aircraft Carrier Viraat, besides holding important staff and training appointments, both afloat and ashore.

He was appointed as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on 3rd April 2001 and took over as the Chief of the Naval Staff on 29th December 2001. Admiral Madhvendra Singh has twice been commended by the Chief of the Naval Staff and is a recipient of the Param Vishist Seva Medal and the Ati Vishist Seva Medal for distinguished service of a very high order. He took part in the liberation of Goa in December 1961 and was in the theatre of maritime operations in 1965 and 1971, as also in "Operation Pawan" in Sri Lanka in 1987. During the Kargil War in 1999, he was commanding the Western Maritime Theatre.

The Admiral is very fond of outdoors and enjoys golf, yachting, riding and skeet shooting. An enthusiastic environmentalist, he is keen on preserving Indian maritime, heritage and history and was recently awarded the Individual Achievement Award by the World Ship Trust, London for the restoration and conservation of Bombay Castle.
