President seeks SC ruling on PC polls President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has sought a Supreme Court ruling to determine whether the Constitution could be amended to hold Provincial Council elections on one day. According to informed sources, the President has also requested that the ruling be made as early as possible as the tenure of some Provincial Councils expire next month. The government has already prepared a bill to hold elections on a Saturday. Commissioner of Elections, Dayananda Dissanayaka, told the Sunday Observer that the tenure of the Wayamba Provincial Councils (Kurunegala and Puttalam districts) would expire on February 8 and added that in accordance with the Provincial Council Act, he would have to issue a gazette notification within a week calling nominations and giving a date for the elections.
