ICT in school curriculum vital by Hiran H.Senewiratne The system of education in Sri Lanka should be geared to provide a technical knowledge in schools to suit the modern needs, said the BOI Director General/Chairman Arjuna Mahendran, at the opening ceremony of the second Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) of Virtusa Ins at the World Trade Centre. "It is the need of the hour to include Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a subject in our education system to face the ever changing modern technological development", he said. The country had faced setbacks and it had not included the required criteria for technological studies in the school curriculum. He said that only 3 per cent of the school population qualified for university admission for higher studies, at which very few pursued technical and ICT education. Virtusa Inc, a US based leading provider of software development and related IT services, had expanded its operations in Sri Lanka, by opening its second Advanced Technology Centeranter (ATC) at the World Trade Centre,he said. Virtusa recorded a spectacular growth of more than 50 per cent during the last year, which was indeed commendable. Virtusa could play an important role to promote ICT knowledge islandwide to face the country's future technological advancement, he added. US Ambassador, Jeffrey.J.Lunstead, who was the chief guest, said that he was indeed happy that a Sri Lankan IT company was doing well in USA. Increase of productivity in the company could lead to a 'win-win' situation for both USA and Sri Lanka. Virtusa's 2nd ATC in Sri Lanka could accommodate 350 more IT professionals with a state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure, said its Chairman/CEO, Kris Canekeratne. He said that this facility comprised a 24-hour virtual software development using data, voice conferencing, video conferencing that run over international private leased circuits in keeping with Virtusa's ICT standard for its global ATCs", he added. Canekerantne said that Virtusa had a staff of over 600 in Sri Lanka. With the inauguration of the 2nd Advanced Technology Centre it would be over 950. Currently, the company was operating in Boston, Hyderabad and Chennai. Virtusa's talented technology professionals was the backbone of the organisation. Virtusans were the very best in the industry, with their capability, dedication and devotion being unparallel, he added. Virtusa had developed relationships with prestigious clients, who had systematically grown with it.
