Mobitel to expand its network

Mobitel plans to increase its investments in Sri Lanka during the next five years with a sum ranging from US$ 150 to 200 million for the second phase of its expansion, said Lalith de Silva, CEO Mobitel.

However, this would only be possible if there was political and economic stability while continuing the peace process. Under such circumstances, a profit of 48 percent on the capital invested could be expected by 2007, he said.

According to him, the growth potential of the mobile phone industry was high.

"We are happy about the successful launch of the new GSM network. We were able to sell over 100,000 new connections within a month of our commercial launch in January. We hope to achieve 400,000 sales this year," said de Silva.

He regretted that due to problems with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authorities, there were delays in giving the SIM connections, which caused great inconvenience to the customers. Mobitel plans to expand their GSM network Islandwide during this year with an increased dealer network in the near future.

This would further enable the new subscribers to obtain Mobitel connections, pay their bills and experience the Mobitel GSM network. (RW)
