Behold the empire

Rock Saturday

The 31st of January, eight great rock artists, the Cr & FC and a cocktail of thunder and original Sri Lankan Rock music. Rock thirsty Fans of the Sri Lankan hard rock community gathered in force to witness the first Rock Saturday for the year, and it was nothing short of breathtaking.

The opening chords were strummed by Dylan Jayakody, whose contribution to the Rock Saturdays has been tremendous. He displayed his usual consistent energy playing amazing renditions of acoustic covers along with his own compositions. Kreb's Cycle took to the stage after a brief hiatus - and now a four piece performed some of their originals and some covers in alternative/hard rock fashion. Audiences witnessed a very interesting performance by the young blood of Sri Lankan Metal Headon Kollision. These guys could really, really travel the distance in the months to come with the right guidance and proper musical infrastructure. A Nu Metal band with great potential needs to focus on tightening up and gaining more experience. With their 'heads' in place.

The reputed Primal Liyanage performed a stunning set of acoustic tracks including the dark Simon and Garfunkel ballad 'The Sounds of Silence'. As a senior musician it was enthralling to witness a musician of such immense talent on the same stage with some bands just kicking off on first or second gear in our industry. Primal showed professionalism, energy and character with every perfected note he either played or sang. Rock bands, fans and others were humbled to experience the authenticity of Mr. Liyanage and encored even if their musical choice was in the extreme.

Sri Lankan Fusion Metal's leading band Whirlwind played a fantastic set, with originals from their debut top selling album Wedana (Pain) - that is available at most CD outlets. Their renditions of Nevermore's 'The heart collector' and 'Killing me, killing you' by Sentenced were of a very high standard.

By now the CR & FC had packed almost 900 Rock Fans. The next band was a fitting crowd puller. The Grunge master four piece from Kandy Paranoid Earthling. The Earthlings ripped into a great list of songs that included popular originals 'Pull me under', 'Bringing back the sun' and 'Proceed'. These lads have come a long way in a short time. They displayed great showmanship, and performance skills, but were not as 'tightly coordinated' as they could have been.

Taunt was the next band up, and having undergone a few line up changes clearly defined that their hearts were placed in the Metal realm now. The band was like dynamite - they exploded into some fine originals. Taunt needs to focus on grooming themselves and could stand someday at the forefront as one of Sri Lanka's top Metal bands.

The evening was concluded by gospel Rockers Ezra, who clearly showcased that a band with different views and a sound could get the attention of the crowd. Ezra stands as one of the leading alternative bands in the country - with a very energetic, entertaining live show.

The CR & FC has now become the sanctuary for Sri Lanka's top Hard Rock bands and is now the most awesome Rock venue in town. The Rock Saturday shows continue to soar higher, growing with every gig.

Rock Company, the Rock Bands and the expanding Rock and Metal masses have sown the seeds for an empire that slowly spreads its magnificent wings. Behold the empire of Sri Lankan Originality.
