Meets Thamilselvan tomorrow : TNA flummoxed by court order by S. Selvakumar The injunction order of the Colombo District Court restraining the central committee members of the Tamil National Alliance convening any meeting without the permission of the TNA leader V. Anandasangaree has placed the former TNA parliamentarians in a delicate situation vis-a-vis the forthcoming general elections. The TNA consists members of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC), Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisations (TELO), and the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (Suresh wing) EPRLF. It was originally decided to have the rising sun symbol of the TULF to contest future elections under the Tamil National Alliance. However, since the rift between the TULF leader Anandasangaree and the rest of the central committee securing the rising sun symbol for the forthcoming elections has become an issue among the TNA ex-parliamentarians. As a precautionary measure the house symbol of the former Federal Party has been notified to the Elections Commissioner in case the rising sun symbol became an issue. Meanwhile, Tamil party sources said that former TNA parliamentarians are scheduled to meet in Colombo today to discuss the matter further. General Secretary R. Sampanthan yesterday confirmed to the Sunday Observer that a meeting is scheduled for today in Colombo. However, the usually jovial TULF top ranker lost his cool and refused to comment when asked, whether the scheduled meeting is being held with the knowledge of Anandasangaree in view of the injunction order. TULF leader Anandasangaree said he is still awaiting the decision of other members on the issue of the TNA election platform which would be finalised shortly. Meanwhile, LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilchelvan who is on a European tour has cut short his visit and is returning to the country this afternoon. He is expected to meet with TNA leaders in Kilinochchi tomorrow to discuss the rift with Anandasangaree and in the event of the disagreement continues how the TNA should conduct itself in the general elections. A section of the TNA still hopes for a patch up with Anandasangaree at least until the elections are over. |
