UPFA expands : CP, LSSP join Alliance

The new United People's Freedom Alliance further expanded into a major multi-party political coalition last with the entry into the Alliance of the two traditional Left parties, the LSSP and CPSL.

An UPFA spokesman claimed that the Alliance was "becoming very popular among all section of society and has become a broad Centre" Left social democratic force embracing all communities in the country. "Our symbol, the betel leaf is a symbol of the culture of our three major communities. Our symbol is our strength", the spokesman said.

The other parties in the Alliance are MEP, the National Unity Alliance of Ferial Ashraff, the North based EPDP and the Sathasivam group with a following in the estate sector.
