Sri Lanka open campaign in U.19 World Cup today against Zimbabwe Chris Dhambarage reporting from Bangladesh BOGRA, Feb 14 - Sri Lanka is looking forward to open their under-19 World Cup campaign on a winning note when they take on Zimbabwe in their first qualifying round match to be played at Bogra District Stadium (BDS) here tomorrow (Sunday). Sri Lanka captain Mohammed Maharoof said they have been making good preparations for the Under-19 World Cup and are in a good shape to meet the challenge. He said the morale of the team is high and would make every effort to make their presence felt. Both Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe won their last warm-up games yesterday in Bogra, to go into the opening game on winning notes. Sri Lanka beat Rajshahi Division XI by eight wickets at the Bogra Police Lines ground while Zimbabwe outplayed Bogra District XI by massive 137 runs at the Bogra Shaheed Chandu Stadium in their respective Group 'A' warm-up games. Rajshhhahi Division XI were bowled out for 92 in 23.3 overs before Sri Lanka under-19 replied with 93 for 2 in 21.1 overs. Zimbabwe scored 237 for 9 in 50 overs and bowled out Bogra XI for exactly 100 in 39 overs. Meanwhile the hosts Bangladesh under-19 cricket team ended their final warm-up match yesterday to complete five victories out of five but the brittle top order left coach Richard McInnes with some worries ahead of their first game on Sunday. The hosts dismissed their opponents CCDM Green for 145 but lost six wickets to pass the paltry total at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. Their opponents on Sunday New Zealand bounced back from the stunning loss to the spirited trainees of Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protistan (BKSP) on Thursday with a seven-wicket sail over Narayanganj DSA at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium. Pakistan rode on a blistering century by Fawad Alam to thump Khulna Division U-19 selection by 190 runs while another tournament favourite England thrashed Chittagong District Team 'A' by 84 runs. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe also cruised past their respective opponents in Bogra.There are four matches on the cards for the opening day of the 5th under-19 World Cup. Besides Sri Lanka-Zimbabwe game, the other matches lined up for Sunday are England v Nepal at M. A. Aziz Stadium (MAAS), Bangladesh v New Zealand at Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) and Pakistan v Papua New Guinea at Khulna Divisional Stadium (KDVS). Sri Lanka will play Canada at Rajshahi Divisional Stadium (RDVS) in t their second Group 'A' preliminary round game on Tuesday (17). Sri Lanka born opening batsmen - Gavin and Trevin Bastiampillai, will come against their native country, playing for adopted Canada when the two countries meet. The Bastiampillai openers have shown good form for the Canadian youth team and have been included in Canada's Under-19 team for the World Cup in Dhaka. They are set to walk in as opening batsmen to play against their native country of Sri Lanka. At the same venue, Sri Lanka will meet Australia in their third and last qualifying league round match on Friday (20). The Super League stage will be from February 22 to 27 with the semi-finals scheduled for February 29 and March 2.
