Royal retain Gunasekera Memorial Trophy by LAL GUNESEKERA Royal retained the Sir Frank Gunesekera Memorial Trophy for yet another year. Their III confrontation with Wesley in the schools cricket season at Campbell Park ended in a draw, but the Royalists led by 99 runs on the first innings. Wesley made 118 in their first innings, while Royal who were 196 for 7 overnight in reply, declared at 227 for 9. Wesley in their second turn made 199 leaving the Royalists to get 91 runs for victory in 13 overs, but after quite a scare, were 46 for 5 at stumps. Wesley were poorly placed at the tea break, but bad ground fielding by the Royalists let them off the hook. A. Kettapiaratchi (44 with six boundaries) and C. Liyanage (42 with five fours) were the main scorers for Wesley. Royal's left-arm spinner Heshan Morawaka who had 5 for 27 in Wesley's first innings, claimed 4 for 37 in the second for a match haul of 9 for 64. Royal chased what looked like an impossible target, and lost three of their top order batsmen for unnecessary run outs, while opener Dimitri Siriwardene suffered a cut on his right eye brow to retire hurt. They closed shuttlers after the fall of the fifth wicket. Wesley 118 (Charith Karunaratne 29, Kushan Seneviratne 33, Dilan Marasinghe 16, Navin Dias 5 for 36, Heshan Morawake 5 for 27) and 199 (A. Royal 227 for 9 declared (Gayan de Silva 39, Navin Dias 85, Dhanushka Edusuriya 19, Tharaka Kottehewa 19, Heshan Morawake 20, Janith Jayawardene 21, A. Kumar 3 for 57, A.
