Shehera de Silva clocks fastest timing in Formula cars

by S. K. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

Miss Shehera de Silva, the first lady to drive a formula car in a motor race in Sri Lanka caused a major sensation when she clocked the fastest timing for 1985 model of formula cars at the Suntel WOW Motor racing championship organised by Ceylon Motor Sports Club for McFoil championships at the Pannala International Circuit yesterday.

Miss Shehera de Silva behind a Mobile Auto Colour Standard Formula making her maiden appearance in formula racing drove superbly to clock the fastest timing at the official practices yesterday.

By virtue of this, she will enjoy the pole position which will enable her to get off to a good start this morning when the official races commence. In the same race the second fastest timing was by Niroshan Pereira and in third slot was Lt. Col. Ravi Mayadunne followed by Michael Muthumani and Harsha de Silva.

In the post 1985 formula race it was last year's championship winner Romani de Silva of Team McFoil Auto Colour who clocked the fastest timing followed closely by maestro Rohan de Silva also from the same team.

Miss Shehara de Silva's performance is remarkable as she became the first lady to handle a formula car after successfully driving stock cars - a Nissan March when she won her event at Fox Hill Supercross with some stupendous driving.

Miss Shehera de Silva has undergone training in motor racing in Old Blighty but motor racing runs in her blood as her father maestro Rohan de Silva is one of the best drivers in formula racing in Sri Lanka and has now completed 25 years the motor racing without a break.

A fine record by father and daughter. When father Rohan retires, it is likely that daughter Shehera will don the formula scene, egging the males for better performance as they will not like to finish behind a lady.
