Suntel WOW Championship today at Pannala

Round 1 of the Suntel WOW Championship 2004 will kick off with a roar this weekend at the Pannala International Circuit. The event is organised jointly by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC) and the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association (SLRRA).

This is the first event for the new year, and drivers and riders will be anxious to get off to a good start early.

The Suntel WOW Championship will consist of events for both motor cars and motor cycles. A total of 18 events are planned, which will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15 and go through to about 2 p.m. This year's championship sees a one-make series for the popular Ford Laser/Mazda 323 cars.

There are 11 entries for round I, including last year's winner Sajaad Zuhair, along with the experienced drivers like Dilshard Hamdoon, Rohan Wijeratne and Sisira Goonesekera.

The Army's Col. Ravi Mayadunne will not be taking part in this event as he has now graduated to the Modified and Formula events. The Army will nevertheless be represented by H. P. Wijetunge in this event.

Round I will also see the entry to the Formula Ford event of Sri Lanka's only lady driver Shehara de Silva, daughter of racing ace Rohan, Shehara has time and again proved her worth in the standard cars, and will now enter the Formula Ford (Pre 85) event.

Also new to this event is Johansson (Aka 'JJ') who has previously been out in his Westfield. JJ will join Niroshan Pereira and Ravi Mayadunne in the Pre'85 Formula Ford event. The other two main races are Class SLA - 1600 cc to 3500 cc which will see the likes of Dinesh Deheregoda do battle with Dan Dissanayake and Rohan de Silva in the battle of the Subaru Imprezza vs Mitsubishi Evo.

Also not to be missed will be the Formula Ford Post '85 event where a full field of 10 cars will include the talent of Harsha de Silva, Buddhika de Silva, Romani de Silva, Rizvi Farouk and Rohan de Silva.

This is one of the events that forms the championship and is sure to be one to watch.

On the motor cycle front, the events include Standard/Modified bikes (125 and 250 cc) as also the 4 stroke events.

Here too, the cream of Sri Lanka's riders will be seen in full force.

Round I of the Championship is sponsored by Suntel WOW, the internet arm of leading Telecom Company Suntel.
