Once again Geoffrey Fernando a leading singer in today's show biz scene is in the forefront, this time with his vocalist brother Russel and the formation of a powerful sounding band, 'Boomerang'. "It was much needed in today's scene" expresses the committed Russell "We had no choice but to group together, because frankly people had no place to go to and listen to quality music and with Boomerang we want to bridge that void." Boomerang play basically soul and R&B and revive the exciting sounds of the music by Earth Wind and Fire, Lou Rawls, Cream to name a few, music of an era that is hard to beat even today. The band's sound is unique what with highly talented and artistically expressive musicians, belonging to the band. Besides Geoffrey and Russell, there's Sri Lanka's leading powerhouse bassist Alston Joachim who needs no introduction in our music scene. A rare bassist who is completely at ease in any rhythm, and so humble about his prowess, Alston gives drive to the band. Kumar de Silva a versatile pianist/keyboardist who enjoys contemporary latin matured on soul and R&B and jazz has a hand in the arrangements, lends his voice too on the vocals. Primal Liyanage guitarist/vocalist leans on folk. His artistry blends effectively with the overall sounds. His fingers move swiftly on the fretwork creating exciting single notes and chords. Finally keeping the band together with his stick and snare work is the youthful drummer Jude Thiagaraja who crashes his cymbals and effectively swings the band into the many soul, R&B and alternative rock sounds not heard these days. Boomerang perform on Wednesdays and Fridays at Rhythm & Blues nightspot from 10 pm onwards and at Clancy's on Saturday nights. Make a date, you will make many returns. |
