The month of July sends the pulse rate of the entertainment scene to a higher decibel count, what with so many events on the cards for bands to be in action and music lovers caught in a whirl of enjoyment which spreads till the festive season begins. In the midst of all this activity Cross Section the six piece dance band have been busy, spreading their vibes and playing for weddings and dances. They commence their August dance season with the Law Society of Colombo dance on Friday August 6 at the Galle Face Hotel and follow it up with the popular Bradby Shuffle Class of '69 on Friday August 13, and the other dances on the cards for them. With their elegant and modern pop dance sounds that cater to both young and old, Cross Section is steered by the well recognised and widely acknowledged singer in the dance scene Antoinette de Alwis and the popular singer/guitarist Rodney Rabot. Handling the exciting keyboards is the highly experienced Hilary Christie whose fund of music stretches from the very early years to the present and the immediate present. Actually there's no song that Hilary does not know. He's a prolific vocalist as well. The other keyboardist is Dilip Seneviratne who gives added support with his keyboard artistry and vocals. The energetic bassist Timal Jayamanne keeps that steady beat so essential for a dance band, while the drummer Raj Emmanuel ensures that the whole band is together taking them swiftly through the many changes of rhythms. A baila freak he together with Hilary rock the scene to the delight of the dancers. Catch their performance. |
