Karuna's party played!

by Ranga Jayasuriya

The registration of Karuna's new political party, already in abeyance after the murder of its nominee for the post of the General Secretary, Maran has faced another hurdle as the Election Department rejected the party symbol, Singing fish, saying it would cause confusion with the symbol of the Lanka Kamkaru Eksath Peramuna. Fish is the symbol of the Lanka Kamkaru Eksath Peramuna which is a constituent party of the People's Alliance.

An EPDP spokesman, whose party is facilitating Karuna's entry to mainstream politics said the registration of the party named Democratic- Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was put on hold after the murder of its would be General Secretary.

"We were planning to complete registration work this week, now it has to be postponed," EPDP spokesman Nelson Edirisinghe told the Sunday Observer.

Maran alias Kanakapathipillai Mahendran also known as Satchi Master was shot dead in the Batticaloa prisons by an LTTE cadre.

Edirisinghe demanded protection for Karuna loyalists and charged that instead of giving them protection, they have been put in prisons, where they are being killed by the LTTE.

"We have requested the Government to step up security in the East and increase security for the inmates in prisons," he said.
