Sri Lanka in 116-run win over UAE Sri Lanka romped to a comprehensive 116-run win over the United Arab Emirates with leggie Upul Chandana (4 for 22), champion bowler Muttiah Muralithatan (3 for 21) , and left arm seamer Nuwan Zoysa (2 for 11) scalping the minnows. It gave the host country a maximum of 6 points from their first outing. Earlier, batsman Avishka Gunawardena returned to the fold batting at the pivotal number 3 position to top score with a rather sedate 73. Gunawardena held the batting together while some of the more recognised batsmen departed rather early. Jayasuriya went for 21 and Saman Jayantha, playing in place of the rested skipper Marvan Atapattu, made 18 as the openers posted 39 for the first wicket. Gunawardena, however, steadied the ship with an 89-ball knock having returned to the fold after over a one-year absence after Abbas (2-35) and Khuram Khan (4-32), UAE skipper, came up with some impressive spells to restrict the stong Sri Lankans to 239. UAE, who also showed gall in their opening match to stretch the Indians also at Dambulla on Friday, however, could not keep abreast of the asking rate after Zoysa had done the early damage folding up for 123 in 47.5 overs. Top scorer for the UAE was Ram Veera Rai who resisted for a dour 39 from 124 balls before having his stumps rattled by a vicious leg break from Upul Chandana. For Chandana, the utility player, it was another fine performance by the gutsy Sri Lankan in the wake of a fine showing in Australia in the drwan second Test match which he crowned with a match bag of 10 wickets. Chandana rounded off with a telling allround performance in the wake of his 21 runs with the bat and two catches. Meanwhile, it was a fine comeback for Muralitharan, who skipped the 2-off Test series in Australia, as he chipped in with 3 wickets to display form with the ball ahead of the bigger outings. Chandana finished with four for 22 to cap off a fine all-round performance that also included 21 useful runs and two catches. Bangladesh and India got off the 13-match tournament on Friday with victories against Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. UAE fell behind the asking rate early after seamer Nuwan Zoysa (2-11) snared two quick wickets with the new ball and were finally bowled out for 123 in 47.5 overs. SRI LANKA S.
