Hameed 102 as Pakistan beat defiant B'desh

by Ranjan Anandappa

Pakistan romped home against Bangladesh by 76 runs in their Indian Oil Asia Cup preliminary round limited overs cricket match at the SSC grounds yesterday.

In pursuit of a stiff Pakistani total of 257, Bangladesh lost their way after a reasonable start to be 181 for 7 in 45.2 overs.

The Pakistan innings was woven around a solid third wicket partnership between opener Yasir Hameed who struck an invaluable (102) facing 122 deliveries with ten fours, and Skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq who hit an aggressive 58 with two sixes and four boundaries facing 66 balls. The pair took the score from 91 for 2 to 200 when both batsmen perished while trying to accelerate the scoring in the 42nd over.

Inzamam came down the track to hoist left arm spinner Abdur Razzaq and was stumped while Hameed followed suit for 102 caught in the deep.

Yousuf Yohanna (29 n.o), keeping company with Younis Khan (18), increased the tempo to see the side to 257 for 6 in 50 overs.

Bangladesh, in their turn started off well with openers Mohammed Ashraful and Javed Omar putting on 48 runs.

But Mohammed Sami struck for Pakistan, first dismissing Ashraful for 12 , but Javed Omar batted admirably to be the top scorer for the side with 62. Omar looked the only Bangladesh batsman who could pose any threat to the Pakistanis with his back to the wall batting.

Midway in his innings Omar developed cramps and Ashraful acted as the runner which triggered the dismissal of Omar. Ashraful trying to steal a single could not make good his ground and was run out and Omar had to return to the pavilion.
