1,000 USD for Tendulkar's wicket Diluting the game? by Ranjan Anandappa The ICC is all against illegal money. This being so, is offering cash incentives to get the wicket of a particular batsman the done thing? The on going Asia Cup in Sri Lanka saw the UAE offering 1000 USD for Tendulkar's wicket in the curtain raiser. Does this not incite betting where spectators too could be driven to gambling whether Tendulkar will get out cheaply or not ?. A lead up to feverish betting. Cash incentives for to enhance players performance is understandable, and nobody would grudge a country like minnows UAE in that respect doing so,but to target a particular batsman for money is not playing the game. What with the spectre of big money betting that had gripped cricket, the Hansie Cronje match fixing scandal still a dirty taste in the nostrils in the wake of the Salim Malik, Mohammed Azharuddin and so many other cricketers getting match fixing related life bans. |
