Trinity maul Isipathana 25-7

by S. M. Jiffrey, Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr)

Trinity College, after last week's debacle against their arch rivals St. Anthony's bounced back scoring an emphatic 25 points (1 goal, 3 tries, 1 penalty) to 7 (1 goal) over Isipathana College in an inter-school rugby match played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy, yesterday. At the breather the Lions led 12 - 7.

This is Trinity's first win in five years over the Pathans though figuring in a draw in between. The lions showed an improvement in their fitness from last week and also ran with the ball at every given opportunity.

The lions three quarters moved the ball sweetly for right winger Isuru Jayasena to plant a try near the right corner flag in the third minute. Jayasena himself added the extra points.

But the Pathans hit back in the 15th minute when their forwards carried play into Trinity territory for the three quarters to run the ball through Asitha Tillakaratne, Tuan Asar and Chulana Nanayakkara before centre Nalin Liyanage touched down mid right. Scrum half Prasad Manjula added the extra points.

The lions regained the lead just before the short blast when acting skipper and flanker Dhammika Senarath powered his way to score under the posts, but Jayasena failed to add the extra points.

Trinity went into the offensive immediately after resumption with the forwards applying the pressure on Issipathana defence culminating in a try with winger Niroshan Sanjeewa diving over by the right come flag. Jayasena again failed to add.

In the 25th minute fullback P. Pushpakumara drove play into Issipathana territory, but an infringement inside their '22' saw Trinity being awarded a penalty which was converted by winger Isuru Jayasena which increased the Kandy school's lead to 20 - 7.

With play drifting into the minute when flanker S. A. Ching tore through the Issipathana defence to score by the right corner flag. Isuru Jayasena failed to add the extra points.

Orville Fernando refereed

Trinity won the second XV game 22 - 0 and also the under 11 match 21 - 0. But Issipathana had the consolation of winning the under 15 game 15 - 7 and the under 13 match 54 - 0.
