32 in final round for Silver Jubilee Pin Fernando Trophy by Lal Gunesekera The qualifying round of the Silver Jubilee Pin Fernando Trophy Golf Tournament of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) was played yesterday (Saturday) on a Stableford format with the best 32 scores qualifying for the final round today (Sunday) at 1 p.m. on medal play. This is being sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by United Tractors and Equipment (UTE) together with their major principals Caterpillar, Dexion and BT. This year, the Pin Fernando Trophy competition coincides with the 125th year of the RCGC, and UTE are presenting extra prizes, apart from the main awards. They are - Best Nett Stableford, Best Gross Stableford, Most number of Eagles, Longest Drive at the 8th, Closest to the Hole, at the 9th, Most number of Sandies for par or better, Oldest Qualifier and Youngest Qualifier. There will also be special prizes in the qualifying round. Among those who have won the Pin Fernando Trophy are Willie Barsenbach, Pheroze Billimoria, Nandasena Perera, Alain Gyi, Priya Fernando (the late Pin's son), Senaka Senanayake, Arjun Fernando, Norman Chandraratne, Surein Abeywardene, Sarath Wickremaratne, Mohan Ratnayake and Ranil Pathirane, while Mithun Perera, Nandasena's son, won it last year. A putting competition for the non-golfing invitees too have been organised with the prize distribution scheduled for 6.45 p.m. at the RCGC. A return air ticket to Singapore too is on offer by Gabo Travels (Pvt) Limited on an invitation card raffle draw. It will be recalled that the late maestro Pin Fernando, won the Sri Lanka amateur title on 10 occasions, Indian amateur twice, Western Indian title once, RCGC Championship 19 times, Nuwara-Eliya Club Championships on seven occasions and Havelock Golf Club title 11 times. |
