Scholarships for affected students by ICASL

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) launched a scholarship scheme with an initial contribution of Rs. 1 million for.

The scholarship scheme was set up by the Council of ICASL to ensure the continuation of studies of accountancy students at the Institute despite the death of either of the parents.

The Council has also decided to allow all affected students who have applied for the January 2005 examination to carry forward the relevant fees to the next examination due to the current situation in the country.

President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka Indrajith Fernando said that a number of initiatives have been launched to support members, students and the public who have been affected by this disaster.

Some member firms and stakeholders have volunteered and urged the others too to contribute generously to the relief fund.

A task force is being set up to formulate plans and implement them to assist in the medium and long-term rehabilitation of the country.

Among the arrangements made by the Institute is the setting up of Information Centres in affected areas where grievances of students could be bought to the notice of the Institute through the Director - Member Relations and the immediate provision of study packs free to affected students.

The Institute has also extended the closing date for student renewals by two months and made arrangements to assist members and staff who have lost their houses and offices.

The Institute plans to offer lectures free to affected students, and has set up counselling centres in the affected areas.

Part of the Rs. 7.8 million allocated to the Improving the Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education (IRQUE) project, funded by the World Bank will also be utilised to assist tsunami-affected students.
