For Marambage... Hardwork pillar of success Hardwork, ambition and the concern for others are the pillars of success for Krishan Marambage the person who sells maps in Fort. "I was born as the eldest to a family of two boys in Galle and had my education at the Katandola Junior School until I completed the O/L exams." He is a Dhamma school teacher as well. His father died in an accident and his mother a housewife was burdened with looking after them." "Our mother started a small business of making bags and envelopes that kept the home fires burning." After some time they came to Colombo and now reside in Kelaniya. Initially Marambage learned the ABC of entrepreneurship by selling lottery tickets. It was difficult at first but I learnt it quickly. "I still have the agency. But since I did not earn sufficient profits I wanted to sell something else. I looked around and started selling maps as it was both educative and also more income-generating. "A Sri Lankan map is sold at Rs. 300 while a world map is Rs 350. A six foot map is sold at Rs 1500. All the maps are imported from India and it can be cleaned when it becomes soiled, Marambage said. I sell about 20 maps daily. Earlier I used to sell at all tourist hotels from Mount Lavinia down to Unawatuna but after December 26 I have lost every thing. Therefore I have to walk around to sell my wares as I don't have a fixed clientele. Marambage said that in the event he has some extra cash he can improve his business by importing directly. At present I buy the maps from another person. I can't even get a loan to improve my business as they are asking for guarantors and a collateral. His brother is still studying, "I want to give him a good education and my dream is to own a bookshop one day. (SG) |
