Dress code for Sri Lankan sportsmen and sportswomen

by Ranjan Anandappa

More uniformity has been called for from the Sri Lankan sportsmen and sportswomen in respect of their attire when representing the country at national and international level.

Accordingly, a suggestion made by the chairman of the National Sports Council Saman Amarasinghe has been accepted by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunga.

"This suggestion was made in a gazette notification in the year 1993 No. 778/7 section 38 C but was not implemented and now the time is right to do so," said the Chairman of the National Sports Council Saman Amarasinghe.

In 1993, during the tenure of Amarasinghe as Secretary General of the Schools Sports Council, he successfully did some colour sketches to the schoolboy attire. The Minister is also considering certain amendments in the sports law for the betterment of sports in the country he said.

"The uniformity of the attire should be alike, on and off the field where the blazers and the other clothing are concerned while on national duty"

There are 47 sports registered with the Sports Ministry and displaying the identity and uniformity is important while sportsmen and sportswomen are representing the country at international level.

For this purpose, Minister Kumaratunga has appointed a committee headed by his deputy Sripathy Sooriyarachchi.

The committee: Sripathy Sooriyarchchi, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports (Chairman), Saman Amarasinghe (Chairman National Sports Council), S. Rannuge (Secretary Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports), Milton Amarasinghe (Director General Dept. Sports Development), Hemasiri Fernando (President National Olympic Committee), Duleep Mendis (Chief Executive Officer Sri Lanka Cricket), Manilal Fernando (former President FFSL), Mrs. L. P. Kodikara (Senior Asst. Sec. Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports), Derwin Perera (Deputy Director (Sports) Dept. of Sports Development).
