Colombo University oarsmen win gold and silver by LESLIE FERNANDO Two national oarsmen Chamara Mihiruk Kottehewa and Manikke Gayan Khausalya representing the University of Colombo put up a fine effort to win a gold and silver medal at the Singapore Pools Rowing Championships held from January 20 to 23 at Pandan Reservoir in Singapore. The regatta was conducted by Singapore Rowing Association and this is the first time that rowers from University of Colombo have won medals at a foreign rowing championship. Kottehewa and Khausalya participated in three events: Lightweight Men's Single Scull Open, Lightweight Men's Double Scull Open and Men's Double Scull School/Tertiary. First the pair won the silver in the Lightweight Men's Double Scull Open with a time of 3 minutes 34.44 secs. Kottehewa (bow) and Khausalya (stroke) were beaten by the Malaysian pair Mohamad Shahrol and Mohomed Nurzukhairi 'clocking' 3 minutes 30-64 secs. Kottehewa and Khausalya then achieved greater success, winning the Gold in the Men's Double Sculls School/Tertiary (time - 4.5.68 secs) defeating Harry Lee and Tan Yong Wei (time - 4.33.17 secs) of Hong Kong Yacht Club in the final. In the Lightweight Men's Single Scull Open, Khausalya was fourth with a time of 4.28.8 secs. Oarsmen from University of Colombo, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong Yacht Club participated. The University of Colombo rowers are coached by Lloyd Sirimanne. Sirimanne said that he is happy about the two rowers' performance. Their feats will surely strengthen the University of Colombo rowing squad for their annual regatta with the University of Moratuwa. Both Kottehewa and Khausalya were also in the South Asian Games rowing squad. |
