Tsunami washes away toddy

by Hiran H.Senewiratne

The toddy industry in the country has suffered the least damage but industry sources complain that their toddy tapping equipment has been destroyed following the tsunami disaster.

At present the Excise Department is in the process of assessing the damage caused to the sector to support the industry, to return to normalcy, Excise Commissioner (Administration) L.K.G Gunawardena said.

Secretary, Kalutara Co-operative Distilleries Society Ltd Anthony Warnakula said that more than 3,000 of the 5,000 toddy tapping coconut trees have been damaged in the Kalutara district.

Nearly 20,000 litres of toddy are being tapped daily and this quantity will drop in the coming season.Since the December to February is the off season, the impact caused to the industry was not severe , he said. The toddy industry is mostly prevalent along the coastal line in the Katutara district and its contribution to the total industry was less than 20 per cent.

According to industry sources more than 3000 people are depending on the industry.
