British Airways provides training

A British Airways training course on "Fares and Ticketing" was conducted by course trainer Ravi Widyalankara, Deputy General Manager for Air Global Limited, General Sales Agents for British Airways and Qantas in Sri Lanka.

Present at the Awards Ceremony were Nihal Perera, President of the Travel Agents Association of Sri Lanka, Trevor Rajaratnam, President of the IATA Travel Agents Association, Mohan Pandithage, Managing Director - Air Global Limited and Joe Rajadurai, British Airways Manager Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Trevor Rajaratnam, said he and many others who are today industry leaders, did not have the benefit of such training course, and yet they achieved their current position through the dint of hard work. "Today young people embarking on a career in the travel trade have many opportunities to train themselves, and they should make maximum use of these opportunities," he said.

Nihal Perera thanked British Airways for the initiative taken to introduce training courses such as this one. "In 2005 we are entering a new era in travel," he said adding: "The Billing and Settlement Plan should come into place, perhaps during the course of the next financial year 2005/2006, and courses of this nature help you get to know all aspects of the trade." Confirming that British Airways is committed to assisting the travel industry upgrade their skills and performance levels Joe Rajadurai said: "The Fares and Ticketing Course will ensure you all are able to be absolutely up to speed.

What you need to do is follow up with top level customer service and try to think out of the box." He said Course Trainer Ravi Widyalankara had to first sit for an exam conducted by British Airways before training others.

"This is the level at which British Airways insists we operate because a certificate from British Airways is recognised world-wide".

He also confirmed that more courses from British Airways would be offered to the trade.

They include another Fares and Ticketing Course to be conducted in February this year, a Computer based Fares and Ticketing course, one on Customer Service and another Entrepreneur Middle Management course.

A total of 21 certificates were awarded, with Special Awards to Dilini Perera of Jetwing Travels for "Best Attendance," T. Ramkumar of Atlas Lanka Pvt. Ltd., for Best Result in pre-assignments, and Best Examination Results to Poorna de Zoysa of the Travel Shop who achieved first place. T. Ramkumar of Atlas Lanka in second position and Dinesha Gange of Superlink Travels in third position.
