'Three Club Golf title for Majid Awn From Our Kandy Sports Corr. Majid Awn of Barwill Meridian fame won the "Three Club Golf Contest organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and worked off at the Victoria golf course at Rajawella. This competition is one which requires high skills and only three clubs or golf sticks in ordinary parlance an be used according to the choice of the competitor instead of the usual 14. They will have to use these clubs so selected for driving, putting, pushing and recovery and their task will be all the more challenging and the golfer will have to manipulate to come to terms with the little choice they are allowed with. Majid Awn, a former Isipathana MV flanker and No. 8, made a stableford score of 30, an excellent one, considering the liberties allowed, and Sam Gunaratne finished runner-up. Majid Awn's selection of clubs was restricted to one-iron, five iron and the sandwedge. A feature of his play was that he used the one-iron club for putting as well. This club is widely used by professionals and requires skills of high order. It was raining hard and the golfers found the course difficult to play, especially off the rough. But the execution of the strokes with the one-iron club helped Majid Awn to overcome the obstacles. Since the course was difficult and the ball not running as it normally does Majid Awn decided to drive clean and straight which paid dividends. This helped him to clear the initial holes without much effort and he had no difficulty in getting over the signature hole to romp home winner. |
