Last year's winner Peiris takes lead in OBSERVER-BATA All-Island contest

Lahiru Peiris of St. Peter's College-Bambalapitiya, who was the Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer All Island last year (2004), has taken the lead once again in this year's competition.

In the 27th Observer-Bata Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year All Island Contest, Peiris has polled 201 votes to take the lead in the first week's voting, followed by Sachith Pathirana of Trinity 174 votes and Dulanjaya Wijeratne of Royal in third position with 125 votes.

In the outstation contest, St. Thomas' Kotte skipper Andy Solomons leads with 72 votes, followed by Sudesh Fernando of Sri Sumangala, Panadura 56 votes and L. Manchanayake third 42 votes.

The coupons for voting in the Observer-Bata Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year All-Island and Outstation appear in the Sunday Observer and also on Tuesday and Thursday in the Daily News. Readers are reminded that any cricketer playing for any school team this year is entitled to receive votes in the two competitions.

Readers are requested to send any number of coupons for any cricketer in one envelope as it will help the counting of such coupons each week.

The following schools_S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, St. Anthony's College Katugastota, Dharmaraja College Kandy, Prince of Wales College Moratuwa, St. Sebastian's College Moratuwa, Trinity College Kandy, Mahinda College Galle, Richmond College Galle, De Mazenod College Kandana and Kingswood College Kandy have been grouped into the All-Island category owing to their strength in the game over the years.

Cricketers in the schools mentioned, if they are to participate in the competition, will have to receive votes in the All-Island category.
