Pope may make broadcast from hospital this weekend ROME, Saturday (AFP) Technicians from Vatican Radio on Saturday began making arrangements for a possible live weekend transmission from the hospital room where Pope John Paul II is reported to be recovering from an acute respiratory infection. Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said he would make an announcement later Saturday on whether the pontiff would make a worldwide broadcast of his Sunday "Angelus" greeting and prayer from his hospital bed. The Catholic diocese of Rome appealed to Catholics to go to Saint Peter's Square on Sunday to recite the Angelus with the pope, promising that there would be a hookup with the Gemelli Catholic hospital where the pontiff is being treated. Navarro-Valls said the Pope was "very attached" to the weekly ceremony, which gives him an opportunity to speak informally to the faithful from the window of his apartment overlooking Saint Peter's Square, and was determined not to miss it. His last public appearance before his illness was at the Angelus ceremony last Sunday, when he appeared at his apartment window with some children and released a dove as a symbol of peace. The pope's deputy for the Rome diocese, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, is also scheduled to attend the Angelus ceremony on Sunday, which will be dedicated to a pro-life campaign promoted by the Italian conference of bishops. |
