Record tea exports in two months by Elmo Leonard Sri Lanka's exports of tea for the first two months of this year at Rs 12.7 billion ($128 million) is the highest the country earned for January and February since the boom year of 1998. In the corresponding months of 2004 the country's total tea exports was Rs 11.3 billion ($115 million), a 12 percent increase in real terms, Asia Siyaka's senior vice president, Anil Cooke said. Quantity-wise, exports of tea during January and February this year was 46 million kilos, as against 48 million kilos recorded during the corresponding two months of 2004. A feature of Sri Lanka's exports of tea for the first two months of this year is that 40 percent of shipments were in value added form. In 2004, 37 percent of tea shipments was in value added form and in 2003, 36 percent. |
