Arts Springfest on show 'Madura Wasanthey' / Springfest, the second solo exhibition by Nihal Wickramaratne - will be held at the Alliance Francaise Auditorium, from April 8 to 11.
Wickramaratne spent his early childhood at Meegahaliula in the Badulla district and subsequently in Anuradhapura where his young mind was awed by the age old cultural remains of this ancient city. Having studied in the science stream in school, which is unusual for an artist, he was posted as an executive in a government corporation after completion of his studies. He soon returned to his childhood passion of painting, and now resides in the hill capital of Kandy where he draws inspiration to his paintings from the scenic and culturally rich environment. Wickremaratne studied his art under Kala Bhooshana Pushpananda Weerasinghe, the renowned sculptor and painter, where his natural talent as an artist was moulded. He learnt the art of water colouring under the guidance of M.D.S. Goonatilleke, an award-winning water colour artist and further improved the finer points in portrait painting and pastel work with the late P.S.P. Jayatilleke.
Wickramaratne won the President's Award for sculpture at the 115th annual competition organised by the Ceylon society of arts in 2002, at his first participation. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions in Colombo and his hometown Kandy. At the 116th annual competition which was held on May 13, he won the Merit Award for sculpture, first prize for paintings and both the President's and the Prime Minister's Awards for the best entry. He has formed an arts foundation to help young children to learn and appreciate art by organising exhibitions, competitions and workshops where visiting artists impart their knowledge to the next generation of artists. 18th art exhibition
The show will be open from 8.00 a.m. - 5.30 p.m., and will include some of the latest creations of this prolific artist, who completes at least two paintings a day. Kumara who lives, breathes and dreams art will put on display 30 of his paintings comprising mostly of the female form at the exhibition. |
