Eromie's new CD by Mahes Perera
A first glance at the CD cover and you are struck by the simplicity and elegance that it radiates. It personifies singer Eromie Pinto, a young woman entrepreneur who has won many awards for her creative and exclusive range of hand-made products with paper. The CD titled Reminiscence contains seven tracks and as Eromie informs us, it is a limited edition. The tracks include covers of Endless Dark Night, Love changes everything, Long and Winding Road Ride on Through the Night, The Springtime Fair, the gospel song What colour is God's Skin and Duwana Lesata. Eromie is no first timer to The world of music. She belonged to a family band called 'The Winslow Six' and started off when she was quite young. Her older sister Manella a doctor now, wrote most of the songs the band sang and performed at many functions and concerts and was hailed as a successful group from Moratuwa. "My first recording was in the mid 70s a 45 EP and after a two-year lapse Winslow Six released another EP. Then in '89 Manella and I recorded an audio cassette of originals. There was something like twelve songs and we were happy with the response it received. I love music and that is one part of me that I will never give up, and so I thought making this CD will give me a lot of personal satisfaction", replies Eromie when she asked why she decided on releasing Reminiscence. The music arrangement and co-ordination were handled by Keerthi Pasqual and Sangeeth Wickremasinghe. In the gospel song What Colour is God's Skin, Eromie is joined by Keerthi's daughter Chanui. A winner for her high quality earth friendly Ocean products which saw her carry off the Woman Entrepreneur Award in 2000, 2001 and the Matranal Gold Award, Achiever 2002, for Industrial Excellence, the CD Reminiscence could well be added to Eromie's list of artistic accomplishments. Sri Lanka on french TV
Sri Lankan musicians living in Europe make use of every opportunity to promote their motherland and singer/composer/arranger Anura Jayasinghe can proudly claim his sincerity in this crusade. He was in Sri Lanka recently to complete a video for his song Nidi Nethi Re Yama a track from his CD Welcome to Sri Lanka. "I shall be giving RFO cable television a copy of the video for telecast on their transmission and also to TV 5 the French channel, which is picked up by 45 countries. The scenic beauty of our country has been captured attractively and the song that I sing is about a girl I am always dreaming about. I featured Buddhika Senerath in the clip, because I thought she had a hidden talent in acting and singing and I was happy to give her a break", reveals Anura. A second CD is on the cards and Anura intends to make a DVD of all the tracks on this new album. "I shall be including a French song sung in French, titled Don't Cry My Angel, a parting shot from Anura. - M.P. Sound Journey back in action Guitarist/vocalist Shane Berenger has made a niche for himself in Sri Lanka's music industry with his extraordinary style and artistry. Now after a short hiatus he's back on stage with a newly reformed Sound Journey and will be at the hut, Mount Lavinia Hotel on Fridays commencing April 8. This time around the quintet will have with them the experienced bassist Asiri who was playing in Europe with the band Freak Out. The other members, Shane tells us are Chaminda - drums, Malla - guitar and Dinesh on keyboards/vocals.
"The music we play does not belong to the rung-of-the-mill tunes. We have rehearsed a variety of hitherto unheard songs and in our performances we have introduced visual movements which make a good impact on our audiences" comments Shane who is recognised for his distinctive style in putting over a song be it in the pop, rock or reggae idiom. Sound Journey's repetoire has besides the selective music of Police, Toto, Led Zeppelin, Barey White and Earth Wind and Fire, nuggets for today's groovers, looking for that Friday night enjoyment. The band has had its fair share of popularity playing at Clancy's and Rhythm and Blues at many private and corporate functions which resulted in crowded houses for the band. "I'm happy to be at the hut on Fridays because the heat will be turned on by us and I hope to meet up with all Sound Journey fans, we've got surprises lined up for them," concludes Shane a singer who knows the secret of how to keep his audience with him. - M.P.
