PM lauds local engineers by Rohan Mathes The Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse complimented the local Engineering fraternity for their valued service in the speedy restoration of the physical infrastructural facilities of the coastal areas battered by the tsunami. The Premier addressing a function to felicitate the State Organisations involved in the 'Post-Tsunami Reconstruction' last week at the IESL Auditorium said, "it is unbelievable but true that our engineers were able to restore the roads and bridges in most areas, in less than five days, and to restore the water and electricity supply to all areas, in less than five days of the disaster." He pointed out that all this was achieved for the country entirely by their own engineering talents and expertise, sans foreign consultants and experts. This per se, was a great victory for the country's professionals in the dark hours of desperation and doom. "They not only displayed their skills and expertise, but more importantly they expressed a deep sense of social commitment to the affected communities", he said. He added that as the government moves into the next, long-term phase of post-tsunami development, the professional community's strength, competence and their commitment would be duly recognised and relied upon. The President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, Eng. L.C.R. de Silva said that as the apex body of engineers in the country and also the oldest professional engineering body in the region, felt it incumbent to recognise and publicly acknowledge the immense service the engineers and engineering organisations rendered to the country and its people in their hour of need. At the felicitation ceremony, the Ceylon Electricity Board, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Road Development Authority, Sri Lanka Telecom, Sri Lanka Railways, National Engineering Research and Development Centre, State Development and Construction Corporation, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force were presented mementos for their contribution to post-tsunami reconstruction work. |
