Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Truck launch by Elmo Leonard Sri Lanka became the third Asian country following Japan and Hong Kong to witness the launch of the new generation Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Trucks put out by Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) Japan. MFTBC is a leading Japanese commercial vehicle supplier with a history of more than 70 years, Seiji Akiyama, manager for Mitsubishi in Asia said at the launch, in Colombo. He said that Mitsubishi has 65 percent of Asia's market share for trucks, without considering China. The local dealer is United Motors Lanka Ltd (UML) and its deputy chairman, S. B. Hewage said that MFTBC is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi, Japan's biggest conglomerate, even being engaged in building ships in wartime. The demand for trucks was increasing in spite of economic downturns in Asia and at home, Hewage said. Mitsubishi Fuso was spun off from Mitsubishi Motors in 2003 with a strong focus on trucks and buses, Akiyama said. The new range of trucks was displayed carrying an elephant; its envisaged use in the tea plantations sector; in the construction industry, besides. Mitsubishi's engineer, Makoto Mori, spelled out the new features of the new truck range, at the launch, which included. * A cab over engine truck with an in-dash shift lever; an adjustable steering wheel; * All models equipped with Realise Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) to protect passengers; * New Canters can be equipped with bodies offering easy space for two pallets; * 4-cylinder diesel engine has fuel efficiency, outdoing competitors, it is claimed; * Halogen head lamps which helps improved visibility at night. Hewage said that UML, with its experienced and dynamic team will market the entire range with focused promotions. UML had captured a large share of the truck market in Sri Lanka and intended to expand their share with the introduction of the new generation Fuso Canter trucks. |
