LTTE abducts soldier by Ranga Jayasuriya The LTTE yesterday abducted a soldier near Thotupola point, Muttur, while he was cycling to his detachment, Military Spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake said. Sergeant H.K.Siriwardene from Hakmana was cycling to his camp in Thotupola point, a small detachment of 15 soldiers, when he was abducted yesterday noon by the LTTE cadres who the Military spokesman said had intruded the Government controlled area. The abduction of the soldier yesterday came after an abortive attempt by the Tigers to abduct a soldier in Neelapola, Trincomalee on Friday. A soldier who went to fetch logs escaped an abduction attempt by LTTE cadres holding guns when a fellow soldier in a nearby sentry point fired a few warning shots. The LTTE cadres fleeing the scene fired at the soldier causing injuries in his head and right eye. "We have taken this seriously. This shows that the LTTE is deliberately trying to provoke the Security Forces," Brigadier Ratnayake said referring to the abduction of the soldier. Scandinavian truce monitors had been informed of the incident. Brigadier Ratnayake said Security Forces had seen four LTTE cadres in the Government controlled areas of Kallari yesterday morning before the incident. "When detected by the Security Forces they ran into the woods," he said. |
