Starting young, Lahiru produced results Start young and keep to the game you like best. This is the slogan for most young sportsmen. It has really worked for Peterite Lahiru Peiris who has been voted in as the most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer All Island for the second successive year. Lahiru started playing cricket in 1999 and has captained under-13 and under-16 teams. The third-year coloursman, has been a member of the Peterite 1st XI team 2002 to 2004. He played against Moreton and Southwest district under-16 team of Queensland, Australia at the CCC grounds and top scored with a fine 91 runs in 2002. He toured with the national under-15 team to UAE for the under-15 Asia Cup 2002. Dilip Somaratne, Old Royalist coached Lahiru while in Australia. Right-hand middle order batsman and off-spinner. Lahiru scored over 500 runs this season highest being against Gurukula Vidyalaya unbeaten 100 and 3 half centuries against Royal, De Mazened and Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte. He fared well in this year's 'Big Match' and limited over encounter against Joes. He scored 20 in the Big Match and in the 50 over encounter, he was largely responsible for Peterites win over Josephians. Peterites were 160 for 6 but Lahiru and Delan Udugamsooriya (34) put on a valuable 76 runs for the 7th wicket. Lahiru was in steady from hitting a 59-ball 54 runs with 4 fours and 2 sixes to and helped Peterites to 260 and beat the Josephians. Lahiru 'A' Level student is also in the Sri Lanka under-19 World Cup squad. He went on a scholarship to Australia in 2003 arranged by the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria. Dr. Quintus de Zylva, the President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria was a source of great assistance to Lahiru when he was in Melbourne. Whinstone Foenzuder the President of Old Peterites SC also helped Lahiru. L.F. |
