Nepal king to visit China, Indonesia KATHMANDU, April 9 (Reuters) - Nepal's King Gyanendra plans to visit giant neighbour China as well as Indonesia this month, his first foreign trip since dismissing the government and assuming full power. A royal palace statement on Thursday said the king was due to arrive in China - a key donor to impoverished Nepal - on April 24 to attend the Asian economic conference at Boao in Hainan province. He will be accompanied by Queen Komal and the couple plans return to Kathmandu on April 29, it said, without elaborating on whether Gyanendra would have bilateral meetings with Chinese leaders or those from other nations. Before visiting China, Gyanendra will go to Indonesia to participate in the Asian-African summit on April 22-23. On Feb. 1, the monarch sacked the government, suspended civil liberties and jailed opponents, saying squabbling political parties had failed to crush a Maoist revolt against the monarchy which has left 11,000 people dead since 1996. The king was slammed for his takeover by many nations including neighbouring India, besides Britain and United States. Though New Delhi and London have cut arms aid in protest against the king's move, China has called it "an internal affair". Last week, China's Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing became the most senior foreign leader to visit Nepal and meet the king. |
