Ministry keen to provide more funds for R&D The money Sri Lanka allots in her national budget for research and development (R&D) is less than 0.5 percent of GDP and lesser than the money Bangladesh contributes towards her R&D, Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Tissa Vitarana said. Prof. Vitharana who addressed the 11th annual sessions of the Sri Lanka Association for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (SLAFAR) said that his ministry wished to provide more funds for R&D carried out by SLAFAR, provided SLAFAR identifies on what the money would be spent. The Ministry of Science and Technology had called upon the Ministry of Finance to allot more funds towards R&D in the future. There are two types of research, pure and applied R&D. Sri Lanka should avoid large expenditure on pure R&D as this type of investigation generates knowledge, while such knowledge could be obtained from pure R&D carried out in the developed world. Applied R&D involves identified problems faced by the people of Sri Lanka such as in agriculture, fisheries and technology, the Minister said. EL |
