Australia to
provide $600m for tsunami reconstruction
by Hiran H.Senewiratne Australia will support Sri Lanka to overcome any challenge after the tsunami destruction to the country, High Commissioner of Australia in Sri Lanka, Dr. Greg French said. The Australian government is hoping to provide US$ 600 million for tsunami reconstruction and re-habilitation activities in Sri Lanka, he told the launch of the Australian low cost housing concept by Hi-Tech Lanka Homes (Pvt) Ltd (Hi-Tech). Hi-Tech has set up a factory at Ratmalana at a cost of US $ 100 million to manufacture pre-fabricated housing materials, its Chairman Arjuna Hettiarachchi said. "The tsunami has demanded affordable, cost effective high standard houses for Sri Lanka," he said. Hettiarachchi said the company has developed an efficient low cost housing solution that can be built within 14 days to assist in this national relief effort. Homes are available as either colour washed or standard with the option of having a verandah or not. There are two varieties of toilet designs as well as a wider choice of designs for a new home at an affordable price, he said. The company also provides wall panelling and fences independent of the main construction, allowing the customer to make designs, if necessary, he said. Hettiarchchi said that the company is hoping to negotiate with the government and NGOs to provide housing solutions for tsunami affected people. Hi-Tech Consultant, Rick Berenger said this housing solution is based on a wall panelling method that provides excellent thermal properties, sound insulation and facilities and quick assembly due to its light weight. The company is working in close collaboration with Easybuild Australia Ltd. |
