COMBank
reconstructs four tanks under Dahasak Wew project
The Commercial Bank has undertaken the reconstruction of four tanks under the Dahasak Wew project which was implemented to enhance productivity in the agriculture sector and assist farmers in drought stricken parts of the country. The reconstruction of three of the tanks in the Kurunegala District under this project has been completed with the support of the farmer organisations, the bank said this week. The three tanks, reconstructed were the Aliyamada wewa, Lahu wewa and Nugampola wewa. The Udahingura wewa in the Anuradhapura district is still under reconstruction. The reconstruction of these irrigation tanks was funded by Commercial Bank's Social Responsibility Trust, which was set up by the Bank to fulfil its social obligations in an organised manner. The ceremony to hand over two of the reconstructed tanks, the Aliyamada wewa which covers 35 acres and the Lahu wewa, 24 acres in extent, was held recently. The Chief Guest Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Bimal Ratnayake said that countries that are considered most developed in the world have not overlooked investing to enhance productivity in agriculture. Hence they have achieved a balanced development in technology and agriculture, he said. "Facilitating paddy cultivation in these parts of the country is of paramount importance because these areas produce a large part of the paddy crop in the country", he said. |
