Midaya
ceramics breaks into local market
by Elmo Leonard Midaya Ceramic Co Ltd, Homagama, in exports since its inception in 1969, has entered the local market. Last week, Midaya launched a range of stoneware products at a sales outlet called Dwellings, Green Path, Colombo, making its products available in two shops. Ceramic encompasses porcelain, dolomite, terracotta, stoneware and earthenware. Porcelainware is known for its whiteness and translucency. Stoneware shares equal hardness, is ivory white and can be hand painted. Midaya, Sri Lanka's oldest ceramics manufacturer exports its products to USA, Europe and Japan. The local range is tradenamed, Muluthange and includes stoneware, labelled for storing potatoes, onions and garlic among others. Stoneware containers made airtight are also labelled for storing, milk powder, green gram, lentils, chick peas, ovenware, dessertware and tea sets. "These products are handmade," a spokeswoman told the launch. There are also stoneware products with drizzlers to store coconut, olive and other vegetable oils, vinegar, soya sauce and rock salt. "The drizzler prevents too much liquid pouring out," the company's, Marketing Director, Anura Warnakulasooriya said. The stoneware range also includes banana leaf products, available in Sri Lanka for the first time. |
