UNP shuns JHU motions by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The UNP is unlikely to support the proposed Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) sponsored No Confidence motion and Impeachment motion against the Government and the President for signing the Post Tsunami Operational Management Structure (P-TOMS). The JHU threatened the Government to bring a No Confidence motion and an Impeachment motion if the President goes ahead with P-TOMS. UNP Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said "We are on principle agreed to establish the P-TOMS though there are certain defects in the P-TOMS. Therefore, we have to think twice before supporting the No Confidence motion against P-TOMS." When asked whether the UNP will support the Impeachment motion, Attanayake said that they were not aware of the charges in the motion and the JHU had not yet sought UNP support officially. We are not worried about a No Confidence motion but what we stress is a Presidential Election at the end of the year, he noted. JHU leader Ellawala Medhananda Thera reacting angrily said the JHU would not only bring a No Confidence motion and Impeachment motion but sue all those who signed and were involved in the preparation of the P-TOMS. We will not let traitors to escape, he noted. When asked about the charges in the Impeachment motion, Medhananda Thera said' "There are six counts to bring an Impeachment motion against the President according to the Constitution. President Kumaratunga has qualified in four of the six counts". |
